Weather Update from National Weather Service 

National Weather Service Update: Hilary is advancing north, bringing continuous rain to SoCal. Even as it shows signs of weakening, it is essential to remember that the forecasts for heavy rain and severe flooding remain steady. 

Potential Wind Impacts: While we anticipate some wind impact, particularly in the mountains, deserts, and coastal foothills, the heavy rain and subsequent flooding are by far the most pressing concern. 

Travel Advisory: Given the combination of heavy rain and strong winds, we advise residents to avoid non-essential travel today. 

Sandbags Distribution Update 

In partnership with the Chino Valley Fire District, we are making sand and sandbags accessible to the residents of Chino. Since Thursday, our diligent Public Works Department has sourced and supplied sand for more than 3,000 sandbags. Given the overwhelming demand for sandbags, our stock is depleting swiftly. We recommend residents bring their own sandbags due to the limited availability at Fire Stations. 

Sand pick-up locations are: 

• FS 61: 5078 Schaefer Ave., Chino 
• FS 63: 7550 Kimball Ave., Chino 
• FS 67: 5980 Riverside Dr., Chino.

Wind Impact: Expect tropical storm-force winds from Sunday morning until Monday morning. Secure any loose items in your yard to prevent them from becoming hazards. 

Flooding: The risk for flooding remains high. If you encounter flooded roads, "turn around, don't drown," please find another route. 

Power Outages: Prepare for potential power outages due to the strong winds. Keep your devices charged and stay informed. To report an outage or view current outages, visit the SCE Outage Center.

Additional Tips 

• Continue to keep an eye on forecasts and announcements from trusted sources. Follow the City of Chino and Chino Police Department on social media and track the storm with the National Weather Service. 
• Ensure that your home exteriors are secure. Delay all but essential outings for Sunday, particularly during the heaviest rain and wind. 
• Be alert for water build-up on streets and wind-driven debris. 
• Should you encounter a downed power line, don’t approach or touch anything in contact with it and call 9-1-1. 
• Report fallen trees or significant debris at 909-628-1234. 

City Initiatives 

• The City’s Emergency Response Team has activated the Emergency Operations Center at the lowest level and is actively monitoring the situation. 
• Our Public Works teams are already on the ground, ensuring storm drains are clear and roads are free from debris with an additional 11 Public Works members on standby, ready to address any emergent concerns. 
• Police Officers worked an operation to conduct checks of the flood control channels, washes and easements throughout the city to ensure safety, assist and provide services to the unhoused individuals. • Our Police Traffic Units are prepared to manage and respond to areas of concern. 
• We have signage and barricades ready for immediate deployment in case of unexpected flooding.

Sandbags Distribution Update: The City’s Public Works Department has secured and delivered sand for over 3,000 sandbags since Thursday. Currently, all Chino Valley Fire Stations anre out of sand and sandbags. Our partners at the Chino Valley Fire District, along with the City Public Works Department are coordinating to restock and will keep you updated when more become available.

The National Weather Service has upgraded the previous Flood Watch to a Tropical Storm Warning for our community, including the areas of Riverside, San Bernardino, Ontario, Rancho Cucamonga, and Temecula.

What to Expect:

• Wind: Tropical storm-force winds are expected from Sunday morning until Monday morning. Secure loose items in your yard, and be prepared for possible damage to structures.
• Flooding: Heavy rain is forecasted, with potential for  flooding. If you come across flooded roads, turn around; don't drown!
• Power Outages: With the predicted strong winds, be prepared for potential power outages. Charge devices now and have multiple ways to get alerts and emergency information. To view or report outages, visit: www.sce.com/outage.

As Hurricane Hilary makes its way to our region, your safety and preparation are our top priority. The National Weather Service predicts an increased risk of flooding from late Saturday evening until Monday evening. With the hurricane expected to impact southern California by early Monday, we anticipate the heaviest rainfall to be on Sunday night and the early hours of Monday.
