Attempted Murder of a Police Officer and Carjacking Investigation

10/13/20 Update

CHINO, CA – On October 8, 2020 at 5:00 am, Chino Police Officers responded to a report of an armed carjacking in the area of 14000 Oaks Avenue.  The first responding officer located three suspects in the area.  One of the suspects fired on the officer, striking the officer’s vehicle.  The officer was not injured. 

Officers did not fire on the suspects. The suspects fled on foot.  Officers established a perimeter and took one suspect into custody who was later identified as a 15 year old juvenile from Los Angeles County. He was later transferred to the custody of Fontana Police Department Investigators for an ongoing criminal investigation.

Officers located a second suspect, Richard Baez, a 19 year old man from Los Angeles, suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.  Baez was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.  He succumbed to his injury on Sunday, October 10.

The third and final suspect, a 15 year old juvenile from Los Angeles County, was later located and taken into custody without incident.  He was booked at the San Bernardino County Juvenile Detention Center for two counts of attempted carjacking.
