Officer Involved Shooting with Subject Armed with Knife

Chino, CA – On July 30, 2020 at approximately 3:43 p.m., the Chino Police Department received a 911 call from a male subject, later identified as Gary Hardy Jr., 41 years old from Chino.  Mr. Hardy was requesting to speak with a police officer in reference to receiving threatening messages on his cell phone.  Mr. Hardy asked to meet the officer near the police station and the officer located him in his vehicle in a parking lot near the intersection of Walnut Avenue and 10th Street.  Mr. Hardy exited his vehicle and approached the officer armed with a knife and an officer involved shooting occurred.  Officers immediately rendered aid to Mr. Hardy, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.  No officers were injured during the incident.  The officer involved in the shooting was placed on administrative leave per department policy.  The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office will handle the investigation.
