Emergency Preparedness

Preparing for an emergency is everyone's responsibility. The City of Chino is dedicated to providing the community with information about preparing for any emergency that may strike. The City is counting on everyone to do their part in preparing their homes, neighborhoods, and families.

The responsibility of Emergency Management is within the Chino Police Department. However, each and every one of us has a responsibility in;

  • Preparing your family
  • Assisting your neighbors
  • Volunteering in your community

Volunteer Opportunities:

  • A.C.E.S.  
    • Requirements:
      • Submit a volunteer application
      • Pass an oral interview
      • Pass a background investigation prior to start of the program
      • Possess a valid amateur radio license (Technician or higher)
      • Attended Citizen’s Academy prior to or within one year of becoming a volunteer
      • Complete IS-100, IS-700, and G-606 online course prior to or within one year of becoming a volunteer
      • Possess a handheld or mobile amateur radio

Chino Valley Flood Task Force

Chino Valley Flood Task Force is a network of agencies that play a critical role in preparing for and responding to winter weather and potential flooding disasters. Created in 2015, the group was originally established in anticipation of heavy rains that were expected during the El Niño season. 

The Chino Valley Flood Task Force meets annually to discuss flood fighting strategies and preparedness efforts before the winter season. Agencies that are part of the Chino Valley Flood Task Force receive information on upcoming winter weather storms, significant changes in the water levels at Prado dam, and road closures and road re-openings within the Chino Valley.

Faith Based Collaborative

The City of Chino Faith Based Collaborative was founded in 2007 as a partnership between the City of Chino, the faith-based community, and nonprofit organizations that serve the Chino Valley. The purpose of the collaborative is to develop relationships and work collectively in the areas of community-based programs and services, as well as emergency preparedness.

Faith Based Collaborative meets quarterly on the third Wednesday of the month (February, May, August, and November) from 10 am – 11:30 am.

MET-Net (Meeting Emergencies Together Network)

MET-Net is a network of agencies that play a critical role in managing both natural and manmade disasters. Created in 2009, the intent is to build relationships before a disaster occurs so that when something does happen, those partnerships are already established where support and communications are streamlined.

MET-Net meets twice a year, Spring and Fall, and is comprised of Emergency Management professionals and Public Information Officers.

5 Preparedness Tips

1. Pack a kit: don't forget things like water, food, medication, first aid items, important documents and hygiene items. Use the check-off list to make sure you have everything you need!

2. Make a plan: where will you meet, what will you do, and how will you communicate?
3. Sign-up for Chino Notify to receive emergency and community alerts.

4. Get to know your neighbors: we are more resilient when we stand together. Once you have
prepared your family, encourage your neighbors to do the same.

5. Volunteer in your community: just preparing your family and neighborhood will assist your City in recovering from a disaster quickly. But, if you have a desire to do more consider joining the Chino Cares Volunteer Program or other police department volunteer opportunities

Business Preparedness:

Over 40% of all companies that experience a disaster never reopen and more than 25% of those that do reopen close within two years.

Businesses can prevent closing by being prepared for both natural and everyday disasters.

Business Preparedness includes:

  • Identifying your hazards and risks
  • Having a continuity plan to become operational quickly
  • Training employees on how to be prepared and how to respond
  • Having redundancy resources for equipment and supplies
  • Exercising your plan

We have several community based working groups and workshop presentations available for residents, businesses, and other local organizations to participate in. 

Listos is a grass-roots disaster preparedness program that can be tailored to meet the individual needs of Spanish-speaking communities. The program is delivered in a format that is both culturally and linguistically appropriate for the target population. Alertar y Preparar LISTOS was developed by Aware & Prepare, located in Santa Barbara, to provide Spanish-language disaster preparedness education, both locally and nationally. The core of the Alertar y Preparar LISTOS design is based on building sustainable relationships and partnerships with local businesses, community leaders, and non-profit organizations. 

Listos is a free training offered to the community. Listos training is currently offered in Spanish and English (other languages, including Mandarin are coming soon). The Auxiliary Communications in Emergency Services (A.C.E.S.) Team provides the City of Chino with emergency communications utilizing amateur radio. A.C.E.S. also provides administrative, technical, and operational support to provide emergency communications between the City of Chino and its partner agencies.


The Readiness component focuses on making sure residents, businesses, and employees are properly informed and trained on how to prepare, respond, and recover in the event of a disaster.

The Department hosts annual community workshops and also provides presentations for community groups upon request. In addition, numerous community partnerships have been developed to create working groups that meet to share resources and information relevant to preparedness. The partnerships include, but are not limited to faith-based groups/churches, utility agencies, schools, government organizations, and service clubs.

We also offer the Listos program which is a basic emergency and disaster readiness public education program for Spanish-speaking populations with a grass-roots approach. The purpose of Listos is to provide very basic resources to Latino populations for emergency readiness in an environment in which they feel comfortable. Topics include:

•Fire Extinguisher Use
•First Aid 
•Utilities Shut-off 

The City of Chino participates in the annual Shake Out where millions of people worldwide will practice how to Drop, Cover, and Hold On at 10:18 a.m. on October 18. Participating is a great way for your family or organization to be prepared to survive and recover quickly from big earthquakes– wherever you live, work, or travel.

CalOES My Hazards

MyHazards is a tool for the public to discover hazards in their area (earthquake, flood, fire, and tsunami) and learn steps to reduce personal risk. Using the MyHazards tool, users may enter an address, city, zip code, or may select a location from a map. The map targets the location, and allows users to zoom and scroll to their desired view. The screen then presents information on the risks identified within the search radius, and recommended actions. MyHazards website performs best when using Internet Explorer. Hazard Data is approximate and data layer visibility are subject to the extent of the Map.

EarthquakeCountry Alliance

Earthquake Country Alliance (ECA) is a public-private-grassroots partnership of people, organizations, and regional alliances that work together to improve earthquake and tsunami preparedness, mitigation and resiliency.

ECA develops resources and organizes activities to help everyone who lives, works, or travels in earthquake country be prepared to survive and recover quickly.

FederalDisaster Assistance

To provide disaster survivors with information, support, services, and means to access and apply for disaster assistance through joint data-sharing efforts between federal, tribal, state, local, and private sector partners.

An emergency preparedness campaign to ready the most vulnerable populations for disasters before disasters strike.

MyShake App

Provided in partnership with USGS ShakeAlert and CalOES, MyShake is an app that can be downloaded to your smartphone that will provide earthquake alerts.

National Weather Service

Weather-related disaster preparedness information from the National Weather Service.


Launched in February 2003, Ready is a National public service campaign designed to educate and empower the American people to prepare for, respond to and mitigate emergencies, including natural and man-made disasters. The goal of the campaign is to promote preparedness through public involvement.
