Help Chino celebrate our first 100 years of incorporation, which took place in February 1910. We plan to “Celebrate, Educate, and Commemorate” our way through the year and we hope you will join us.
We have some really great events planned and we invite you and your family to Celebrate at all of them! We will frame our traditional events with a Centennial flair this year, and we will put special emphasis on four very unique celebrations. Visit the Centennial Events page of the website often for the latest details on these special events.
Now please take a moment to embrace our rich history and Educate yourself, and your family, about Chino’s early beginnings. The following is a short timeline and a little history on how the City of Chino came to be. We would be remiss if we did not pay homage to some of those bright minds who foresaw the great community that Chino would become!
Let’s Commemorate and honor the farsighted group who called a town meeting the night of December 21, 1909 at a lodge hall on Seventh and “D” Streets to discuss incorporation. Just one week later, their petition for incorporation was sent to the County Board of Supervisors and on February 24, 1910 local voters approved incorporation with a vote of 135 to 57. Shortly thereafter, a telegram was received on March 3rd from then Secretary of State, C.F. Curry, confirming Chino’s status as a new City! Just two days later, the first City trustees held their initial meeting and H.R. Dunlap, an electrical engineer for the American Beet Sugar Company, the industry that sustained this area for a quarter of a century, was elected ‘President’ or Mayor.
The historical facts and dates provided here allow for a brief glimpse into Chino’s past and provide some history about the City’s incorporation. I hope you enjoy the year-long Centennial Celebration and take advantage of the opportunities to learn about this great community in which we all live, work, and play!
