Chino PD to Discuss Use of Automated License Plate Recognition Readers

Post Date:07/27/2017 11:00 AM

On Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2017 at 6 p.m. the Chino Police Department will host a community meeting to discuss the implementation of Automated License Plate Recognition Readers (ALPR’s). The ALPR’s will be strategically located throughout the city.

The goal of the meeting is to address privacy issues, discuss policy and seek public feedback about the use of ALPR’s. The Public is encouraged to attend this forum, which will be held at the Chino Police Department, Community Room located at 5450 Guardian Way, Chino, CA 91710.

This system uses optical recognition to read vehicle license plates which are then automatically queried against the California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (CLETS). If the system discovers a stolen or wanted vehicle has passed by one of the ALPRs it automatically alerts Police Department personnel.

The Department’s proposal is to mount the ALPR’s at major thoroughfares entering the City. Surrounding cities that have implemented fixed ALPR’s have seen a significant impact in crime reduction. It is anticipated once the system has been implemented in Chino, a similar benefit will be seen here as well.

If you have any questions or concerns about the implementation of ALPR’s, please contact Lieutenant Mensen at (909) 334-3093 or kmensen@chinopd.org.
